Stepwise approach to DED management needed in patients with corneal staining
In patients with moderate corneal staining, a stepwise approach to the management of dry eye disease (DED), including early initiation of topical ciclosporin, is needed, according to new recommendations from a European panel of experts.
The expert panel recommended utilizing topical ciclosporin alone or with corticosteroids, early in patients with clinical risk factors for severe DED. Follow-up visits, they said, should be done 1 month after initiating treatment, and 3 months thereafter.
The experts also highlighted the importance of patient education, both before and during treatment, in an effort to manage outcome expectations and improve adherence.
